Non-Master’s Certification-Only Program
EARLY CHILDHOOD       
Pre K – 3rd Grade          

To be admitted to any non-master’s alternate certification program at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, a candidate must present evidence of having fulfilled each of the following requirements:

       Degree:                Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university

       GPA:                    Adjusted grade point average of at least a 2.5

       Praxis Exams:     Passing scores on all sections of the Praxis Pre-Professional Skills Test
                                                Reading (174) Writing (173)  Math (172)
                                                                        ACT >= 22
                                    Passing scores on the Praxis content test appropriate for the area and/or level
                                                Praxis II Content Area:                     Exam 10014 (150)

Please call the Office of Student Services at (337) 482-6681 to schedule an appointment to have your transcripts and Praxis scores evaluated.  Enrollment in the classes listed below is limited to students who have been accepted into the Early Childhood non-master’s certification-only program.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Professional Education (27 credits of course work + 6 credits of Internship or Student Teaching):
EDCI 353:       PK-6 Mathematics Methods for Alternate Certification Candidates (Pre-req. is 430)
EDCI 405:       Developmental Foundations of Early Childhood Education & Early Intervention
EDCI 408:       Integrated PK-3 Program Design and Instruction (Pre-req. 405 & 430)
EDCI 411:       Developmental Assessment and Research in Early Childhood Education (Pre-req. 405 & 430)
EDCI 428:       Elementary/Middle School Science and Social Studies (Pre-req. is 430)
EDCI 430:       Classroom Management for Elementary Teachers (Pre-req. for all EDCI & READ courses)
READ 309:      Emerging Literacy and Reading Instruction Through Age 8 (Pre-req. is 430)
READ 411:      Assessment and Prescriptive Teaching of Reading (Pre-req. EDCI 405 & 430; READ 309)
SPED 391:       Foundations of Special Education
Both the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Praxis (Exam 10020) and all course work listed above must be passed prior to Student Teaching or an Internship (Fall and Spring).
EDCI 485 and 487:      Student Teaching/Internship for Alternate Certification Candidates I and II

NOTE: No final grade below “C” accepted for any professional education or specialized academic education course required for this certification.  Any course substitutions must be approved by the Dean’s Office.
